I know I’m quite late posting this up, but I was away overseas when the A Walk on the Wild Side collaboration was revealed and I sadly couldn’t join the others in sharing my work on CD with the world. I was so honoured to be a part of this collaboration (my first one!) consisting of 36 sugar shoes from amazingly talented and wonderful artists. Anyone who knows me, knows I love sugar shoes so to be a part of this was truly a dream come true.

My inspiration came from an image that I loved so much I needed to honour it immediately through sugar art. I made two sugar stiletto’s to represent this beautiful and haunting image – I still don’t know who the original artists is, but boy I’d love to thank them for the inspiration. My shoes consisted of isomalt heels (I made 8 before I was happy with the colour and look), one heel with pulled sugar to represent the Koi Carp fin and tail. The other heel had a decorative fan made of fondant and cake lace set on a cardboard fan I made as a mould, then hand painted. I used cake lace to provide texture and to mimic scales on the shoes, although the soles are meticulously hand marked and then painted haphazardly in gold. I used isomalt quite a bit on these shoes to make uniform drops, flowers and brooches as design accents. Both shoes are all edible, with the exception of the wooden and ceramic hair accessory I made. These are by far my all time favourite shoes I’ve made.

A massive thank you to Heba from Sweet Dreams by Heba who brought us all together and kept us organised, on track and having fun. And hugs to my co-collaborators who were amazing to work with and learn from x
